Vital stats

29 February 2008 · 1 Comment

Everyone loves a good stat, right?

Well today Jackson:

  • weighs 12.18kgs (just under the 75th percentile)
  • is 81cm tall (just under the 75th percentile)
  • has a head circumference of 48.9cm (off the chart).

Sister Leigh-Anne said, very kindly I thought, that he will grow into his head one day.

So Jackson only has one more appointment with Sister Leigh-Anne at 18 months, and then he doesn’t see her again until he starts school.

This makes me overwhelmingly gloomy because I have never met a more amazing midwife.

She always makes you feel like the most FANTASTIC Mum and greets you every time with: “Oh my goodness Mommy, look at this child, you are doing SUCH a great job. He’s incredible, he’s just PERFECT.”

And it really doesn’t matter that she says it ALL the mothers, she says it with such sincerity that you can’t help but glow with pride.

In fact, weekly meetings with Sister Leigh-Anne would be reason enough for me to want to have another baby.

Look what I bought today…

Not a baby? Sigh.

This is how Jackson spends 95 per cent of his time in the bath now…

Great for washing his feet, not so good for washing anywhere else.

One whole year

29 February 2008 · 2 Comments

Jackson and I have been back home in South Africa for one whole year today (well actually, we left on 28 February and arrived home on 1 March 2007, and obviously today is 29 February…ugh, whatever I have a bit of a hang over).

Anyway, we are off to celebrate our one year homecoming with an MMR injection.

Here’s my scrumptious little boy on the day we arrived – the first time he ever felt the sun.

There’s no milk in jail, Jackson

28 February 2008 · 1 Comment

As we all know, Jackson LOVES doors.

So on our epic 100 meter journey from our front door to our car each morning (it can take 20 minutes on a good/bad day), Jackson likes to stop in the lobby and open and close a couple of post boxes.

Just like this….

And I didn’t think much of it, until I saw this…

WTF! He is SO not playing with those boxes anymore.

Jackson’s favourite foods

27 February 2008 · Leave a Comment

Are (eaten altogether): black olives, raspberries, tomato sauce and yoghurt.

OMG, my son is actually a pregnant woman.

So, this funny lady invited me to join the recently launched SA Bloggers Forum.

Of course, I’m going to try and play it cool and all on the outside, but inside I’m secretly rather thrilled to make new blogging buddies.

There’s not much you could say…

…that would convince me that Jackson actually does his own art at school.

So when his teacher tells me that he is now beginning to remember the actions to the songs they sing, I can’t help but answer: “Hmmmmm…OF COURSE he is.”

UPDATE

Ok, he MAY have done this one…

Swimming story

25 February 2008 · Leave a Comment

Jackson loves to burp. He loves to burp loud and long, and preferably with an audience.

So we were at swimming on Saturday morning when Jackson let out the loudest, longest, most revolting burp I have ever heard in his short life, much to the delight of Debbie, our swimming teacher, and the other parents who all giggled a slightly embarrassed giggle.

Then one of the mothers said to me: “You know, he’s a proper oke.”*

And, as a single Mum doing her very best to raise a son, you don’t know how much her saying that pleased me.

*From the South African Surf Dictionary:
Oke (‘Oak’), ou, o (as in “owe)
Despite being low on letters, oke or ou are huge words. This word, or its variant, is one of South Africa’s most common words for a male human. Probably comes from the Afrikaans “Ou pel” (Old mate), but the adjective became the noun after the “pel” was dropped. Only a male can be an “oke” or an “ou”, pronounced “Oh.” “That ou says he can paddle around Seal Island with one leg.”

It’s 8.30pm and I’m sitting here all amped for the re-run of Strictly Come Dancing. BTW…did I tell you that when I was in the audience, I sat behind an-old-woman with-the-biggest-hair-in-the-world™. I have a feeling I’m going to look like a little monkey looking out from behind a big old Delicious Monster leaf or something.

Killing time surfing the net, I came across one of the funniest sites ever, ever, ever: Stuff White People Like. I have laughed my ass off for the past 20 minutes.

Anyway, here are some pictures of my little dooooood looking reeeeeeeal cuuuuuute (man, I write badly when I drink.)

Don’t get me wrong, my job is pretty damn awesome – but sometimes I kind of miss being on maternity leave.

Whatevs…at least I get to enjoy that Friday-feeling.

Strictly Come Delightful

22 February 2008 · Leave a Comment

I <3<3<3<3<3<3<3 Strictly Come Dancing, it was so glamorous and gorgeous and fun. Sigh.

Apparently I was on TV about seven times (I think it was the dress) so I shall be glued to my telly on Saturday evening when they show the re-runs (I am so vain).

I am also very lucky, because Jackson stays with my Mum every Thursday night. She picks him up from school in the afternoon, they have Nana fun together and then she takes him to school on Friday morning.

Which means Thursday night is DATE night for me.

Anyway, this is the text message I got from my Mum at about 4.00pm yesterday afternoon:

“One exceedingly grubby boy collected. He was having a stand up fight with his teacher when I arrived, he wanted to jump from the top of the climbing frame but she thought not! He’s v focused, she said.”

Hmmmmm…v focused, I wonder what that is teacher-speak for?

But just look at how cute he was when he was three weeks old (we were staying with Faye, Martin and Nicholas).

Come to think of it, he was pretty “focused” even back then.
