When Jackson was born, I thought to myself that it would be a good idea to make his birthday cake from scratch every year until he can bear the embarrassment no longer.
And now it has become this big thing in my head, like it is an expression of my love for him and if I don’t do it I have FAILED as a mother. Which is a bit dramatic and slightly odd, but there it is, lodged in my brain and there is no escaping it.
2007 – made with the help of the biggest hangover in the world. Ever.
So now it’s his third birthday in a couple of weeks and I have to decide on a cake. Right now the two options are a horse or a diplodocus. Jackson doesn’t care as long as it’s blue.
2008 – so proud of this, can I ever possibly top it? It was a banana cake with cream cheese frosting. So delicious it was inhaled by the guests. Will be using same recipe this year, although with slightly less nutmeg.
So, the question is, do you care about the cake? I’ll make whichever gets the most votes. Let’s do this.
Jackson’s third birthday cake should be:
(polls)
In other news, yesterday afternoon Jackson and Dave (and me too a little bit) ended up playing an incredibly raucous game of dragon/tiger/monster/troll slaying which involved running around the house shrieking, hitting each other with the Lego swords and hiding (Jackson was doing most of the hitting with swords and hiding, Dave was doing most of the shrieking).

I made him climb in there to hide. Dave says I need to call this photo Jack(son) in a box. Meh…I give that a 5/10 for funny.

What a cute photo of Jack in the Box!
Cake sounds fabulous! Thankfully my love for Logan isn’t shown in the baking of cakes! I’d be the worst mommy ever! To be fair though, if Logan chose to make an appearance when he was suppose to (and not the day before Christmas) it would probably have been a different story as well!

ohmygosh! your dragon cake is GORGEOUS!
I’ve always let my mom do the cakes for my kids before, but I recently started baking for the hell of it (one of those things I do when I’m pregnant – and possibly the reason hubby likes to keep me in this state!) and discovered I might become kind of okay at it.
So I’ll be doing the cakes myself from next year.

I didn’t know you had this cake baking talent! I am extremely impressed to say the least. My poor kid can be thankful that she has a grandmother who is a whiz in that department, cause I can assure you that I don’t have anywhere near your amazing skills.
My cake vote goes for horse (mostly cause I don’t know wtf a diplodocus is?! and I’m too lazy to google it- ha!).

Oh my god I remember your dragon cake now, wow.. amazing! As you know I love making Amy’s birthday cakes for the same weird reason, like if I don’t I am suddenly not the mother I thought I was. I however have often cheated and bought cakes to cut up and ice or used box cakemix. Banana cake with creamcheese icing sounds DIVINE!

LOL at J in the box. I voted diplodocus, but it’s very very similar to the dragon, just a thought

Our birthday cakes were the only things I remember my mom ever baking and she also did everything from steam trains to those dolls in fancy icing dresses. Maybe she was also expressing love through cake? Whatever the case, we LOVED those cakes and I still have photos of most of mine, even the ones that she thought were failures.
